This game requires a memory pack to save games.
Duke Nukem 64 is a 1997 first-person shooter for the Nintendo 64, serving as a modified port of the classic PC game Duke Nukem 3D. Developed by Eurocom and published by GT Interactive, the game follows iconic hero Duke Nukem as he battles an alien invasion across a reimagined Los Angeles, space stations, and the moon.
Key Gameplay Features
- 32 Nonlinear Levels: Players navigate iconic locations such as a movie theater ("Hollywood Holocaust") and Area 51, focusing on exploration, puzzle-solving, and finding secrets.
- Unique Arsenal: Features classic weapons like the Shrink Ray and Pipe Bombs, alongside N64-exclusive additions like a Grenade Launcher, Sub-Machine Guns (dual-wielded), and a Plasma Cannon.
- Enhanced Interactivity: Duke can interact with the environment in ways unusual for the era, such as drinking from toilets for health, playing pool, or using a Jetpack to reach high areas.
- Multiplayer Options: Supports up to 4-player split-screen "Dukematch" and a 2-player cooperative campaign mode.
- Dukebots: Features computer-controlled opponents for multiplayer, allowing users to practice against "bots" even without other human players.
Differences from the PC Version
- Content Censorship: To meet Nintendo’s standards, much of the adult content was altered; for example, adult bookstores became gun shops, and bars became burger joints.
- Saving Babes: Instead of being able to kill or ignore captive women, Duke now "saves" them, which is tracked on the level-end screen.
- Visual Enhancements: While still using 2D sprites for enemies, the N64 version introduced 3D polygonal explosions and a fully 3D final boss.
- Audio Changes: Most level music was removed in favor of ambient sounds, though Duke’s iconic one-liners remain intact.
