Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon for the Nintendo DS (2009) is a tactical role-playing remake of the series' first title, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, originally released only in Japan. It serves as the eleventh installment in the franchise and marks the first time the original story of Prince Marth was officially localized in the West.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

The game retains the series' hallmark turn-based, grid-based strategy and introduces several modernizing features:

  • Weapon Triangle: Implements the rock-paper-scissors system (Sword > Axe > Lance > Sword) not present in the Famicom original.
  • Reclassing: Allows units to swap between various character classes of the same tier to better fit your strategy.
  • Permanent Death: As a core series staple, characters who fall in battle are lost forever, forcing players to plan every move carefully.
  • Mid-battle Save Points: Introduces single-use tiles on maps where you can create a "hard save" to retry battles from that specific point.

Story and Setting

Set on the continent of Archanea, the narrative follows Prince Marth of Altea:

  • The Conflict: One century after the hero Anri defeated the Shadow Dragon Medeus, the beast is resurrected by the evil sorcerer Gharnef.
  • The Quest: After his kingdom is invaded and his father killed, Marth flees to the island of Talys. Years later, he embarks on an epic journey to reclaim his homeland, rescue his sister Elice, and wield the legendary sword Falchion to defeat Medeus once again.
  • New Content: This version includes a new four-chapter prologue detailing Marth's initial escape and introduces several new characters and side quests.

Visuals and Features

  • Touch Controls: Fully utilizes the Nintendo DS hardware with intuitive touch-screen controls and a dual-screen interface.
  • Multiplayer: Notably the first game in the series to offer online play via the (now-discontinued) Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, allowing 1v1 battles with custom teams.
  • Art Style: Features redrawn character artwork by Daisuke Izuka, with contributions from Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell).
