Ghouls 'N' Ghosts for the Sega Genesis is a classic 1989 action-platformer and the direct sequel to Ghosts 'n Goblins. Developed by Capcom and famously reprogrammed for the Genesis by Sega's Yuji Naka (of Sonic the Hedgehog fame), it is celebrated as one of the console's first "arcade-perfect" ports.
Story and Setting
Set three years after the previous game, the plot centers on the courageous knight Sir Arthur. The Demon Realm's ruler, Loki (known as Lucifer in the arcade version), has stolen the souls of the kingdom's people, including Arthur's beloved Princess Prin-Prin. Arthur must fight through eerie stages—ranging from the Village of Decay to the Crystal Forest—to infiltrate the Demon's Castle and defeat the Prince of Darkness.
Core Gameplay Mechanics
The game retains the series' hallmark "harrowing difficulty" and specific combat mechanics.
· Armor System: Arthur begins with a coat of armor. If he takes a hit, the armor falls off, leaving him in his boxer shorts; a second hit turns him into a skeleton and costs a life.
· Vertical Combat: Unlike its predecessor, this version allows Arthur to fire his weapons directly upward and downward while jumping.
· Gold Armor & Magic: Finding a treasure chest while wearing steel armor may reveal the Gold Armor. This allows you to "charge" attacks to release powerful magic, with the specific spell determined by your current weapon.
· The "True" Ending: To officially beat the game, you must complete all five stages twice. Upon finishing the first run, you are sent back to the beginning to find a special weapon required to face the final boss.
