The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, released in 1998 for the Game Boy Color (GBC), is an enhanced, colorized version of the original 1993 Game Boy title. It is widely considered the definitive version of Link's first handheld adventure, taking place on the mysterious Koholint Island rather than the traditional kingdom of Hyrule.

Core Story and Gameplay

  • Premise: Link is shipwrecked on Koholint Island during a storm. To escape, he must collect the eight Instruments of the Sirens to awaken the mythical Wind Fish, who slumbers in a giant egg atop the island's highest peak.
  • Perspective: The game uses a top-down view for exploration and dungeon-crawling, with occasional side-scrolling sections inspired by Super Mario.
  • Progression: Players navigate an overworld and conquer eight main dungeons filled with puzzles and bosses to obtain items like the Pegasus Boots, Hookshot, and Roc's Feather.

Exclusive DX Features

The DX (Deluxe) version introduced several additions specifically for the Game Boy Color hardware:

  • Full Color Graphics: The entire game world was colorized, making objects and enemies stand out more than in the original grayscale version.
  • The Color Dungeon: A secret, optional dungeon accessible only on the GBC system. It features color-based puzzles and rewards Link with either a Red Tunic (increases attack power) or a Blue Tunic (increases defense).
  • Photo Sidequest: Players can visit a Camera Shop and trigger twelve special events throughout the game to have their picture taken.
  • Game Boy Printer Support: These photos could be viewed in an in-game album or printed out as stickers using the Game Boy Printer.
  • Backward Compatibility: Despite being optimized for the GBC, the physical DX cartridge is backward compatible with the original monochrome Game Boy (though the Color Dungeon is restricted).
