Mega Man II (known as Rockman World 2 in Japan) is a 2D action-platformer released for the Game Boy in late 1991 and early 1992. It is the second handheld entry in the series and is notable for being the only title in the Game Boy line not developed by Minakuchi Engineering, instead being outsourced to Thinking Rabbit.

Plot Summary

The nefarious Dr. Wily steals an experimental "Time Skimmer" from the Chronos Institute and travels 37.426 years into the future. There, he captures a peaceful future version of Mega Man, remodels him into a combat robot named Quint, and brings him back to the present to destroy his past self. Mega Man must fight through eight revived Robot Masters and stop Wily at his space fortress.

Gameplay Features

  • NES Mashup: Like its predecessor, the game combines elements from two NES titles. The first four bosses (Metal Man, Air Man, Clash Man, Wood Man) are from Mega Man 2, and the final four (Needle Man, Magnet Man, Hard Man, Top Man) are from Mega Man 3.
  • New Abilities: This entry introduced the slide mechanic to the handheld series.
  • Rush Support: Mega Man's robot dog, Rush, appears for the first time on Game Boy, providing the Rush Coil (high jump), Rush Jet (hovering), and Rush Marine (underwater mobility).
  • Unique Weapon: Defeating Quint grants the Sakugarne, a pogo-stick-like jackhammer weapon.
