Mother 3 is a full English translation.
Mother 3 is a role-playing game released in 2006 for the Game Boy Advance, serving as the third and final entry in the Mother series (known as EarthBound in the West). Developed by HAL Laboratory and Brownie Brown, it was directed by series creator Shigeasto Itoi.
Setting and Story
The game is set on the Nowhere Islands, a remote archipelago that begins as a peaceful, simple society but is gradually transformed by the invading Pigmask Army. The story follows Lucas, a young boy who must overcome personal tragedy and grow into a courageous hero to stop the Pigmasks' leader, Porky Minch, from awakening a legendary Dark Dragon that sleeps beneath the islands.
Unlike its predecessors, Mother 3 features a chapter-based structure that shifts between different protagonists—including Lucas's father Flint, a thief named Duster, and a captive monkey named Salsa—before their paths eventually intertwine.
Core Features
- Tone: The game is famous for its slogan, "Strange, Funny, and Heartrending". It maintains the series' characteristic witty humor and bizarre character designs while exploring mature themes like grief, capitalism, and environmentalism.
- Musical Battle System: While it uses traditional turn-based combat, Mother 3 adds a rhythm-based mechanic where players can perform up to 16-hit combos by pressing the button in time with the background music's beat.
- Rolling Health: Returning from EarthBound, HP is displayed on a rolling "odometer". If a character takes fatal damage, the player can still save them by healing before the counter reaches zero.
- Dash Mechanic: Players can hold the B button to dash, allowing them to travel faster and instantly defeat significantly weaker enemies without entering a battle screen.
Release and Legacy
Mother 3 was famously never officially localized outside of Japan due to its late release in the GBA's lifecycle. However, it gained massive popularity in the West following a 2008 high-quality fan translation. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the best RPGs on the GBA and a masterpiece of video game storytelling.
