Super Mario Land is a 2D side-scrolling platformer released in 1989 as a launch title for the original Nintendo Game Boy. It was the first Mario game developed for a handheld console and is notable for being produced by Gunpei Yokoi and directed by Satoru Okada rather than series creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
Story and Setting
Unlike most entries in the series, the game takes place in Sarasaland, a world far from the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario must rescue Princess Daisy (in her series debut) from the space alien Tatanga, who has hypnotized the inhabitants of the land's four kingdoms.
Gameplay Features
While it retains core elements like jumping on enemies and collecting coins, it introduces several unique mechanics:
- Four Themed Worlds: Mario travels through Birabuto (Egypt-themed), Muda (water-themed), Easton (Easter Island-themed), and Chai (ancient China-themed).
- Vehicular Levels: In specific stages, gameplay shifts from platforming to a horizontal shoot-'em-up. Mario pilots the Marine Pop submarine in World 2-3 and the Sky Pop airplane in World 4-3.
- Unique Power-Ups: The traditional Fire Flower is replaced by the Superball Flower, allowing Mario to throw "Superballs" that ricochet off surfaces at 90-degree angles to defeat enemies or collect distant coins.
- Level Structure: The game is relatively short, consisting of 12 levels across 4 worlds. Completing the game unlocks a "Hard Mode" with more enemies.
