Tactics Ogre The Knight of Lodis is a critically acclaimed tactical RPG released for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2002 (North America). Developed by Quest and published in the West by Atlus USA, it serves as a prequel to the broader Ogre Battle saga, specifically set 23 years before the events of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.
Plot and Setting
The game follows Alphonse Loeher, a young knight from the Holy Lodis Empire sent to investigate political unrest on the island of Ovis. The story is known for its mature themes of political intrigue, ideology, and shifting loyalties as Alphonse discovers the corruption within his own empire.
- Multiple Endings: There are five possible endings determined by player choices, the number of allies lost, and specific battle performance metrics.
- Protagonist Focus: Unlike previous entries where Lodis was an external threat, this game offers a perspective from within the empire.
Gameplay Features
The game features deep, turn-based strategy on grid-based isometric battlefields.
- Emblem System: A unique mechanic where characters earn "Emblems" by performing specific feats in battle (e.g., killing two enemies with one spear strike). These emblems are often required for changing into advanced classes, such as the Swordmaster or Valkyrie.
- Class and Party Customization: Players can command up to eight units in battle from various races and classes, including ninjas, clerics, and even mermaids.
- Elemental Influence: Every tile on the map has an elemental affinity that affects damage and magic effectiveness based on the character’s alignment.
- Game Modes:
- Main Campaign: Offers roughly 40+ hours of gameplay.
- Quest Mode: Allows players to undertake episodic challenges with a set turn limit to earn rare equipment.
- VS Mode: Support for head-to-head battles using a GBA Link Cable.
