Wario Land 4 is a 2001 2D platformer developed by Nintendo R&D1 for the Game Boy Advance. It features Mario's greedy rival, Wario, who explores a legendary Golden Pyramid in the jungle to claim its treasures and save Princess Shokora from the Golden Diva.
Gameplay Mechanics
The game introduced several shifts from previous entries in the series:
- Health System: Unlike the invincibility found in some prior titles, Wario now has a health meter that must be replenished by collecting heart pieces.
- Level Structure: Stages are divided into two parts. Wario must first find four gem pieces and a ghost key (Keyzer). Once he reaches a Frog Statue, a self-destruct timer triggers, forcing a frantic dash back to the start before time runs out.
- Transformations: Wario can still undergo bizarre physical changes to solve puzzles, such as turning into a Zombie, Bat, or catching on fire to break specific blocks.
- Passages: The pyramid is split into four main thematic passages—Emerald (nature), Topaz (toys), Ruby (mechanical), and Sapphire (horror)—each guarded by a bizarre boss.
Visuals and Audio
The game is widely praised for its vibrant, high-quality sprite work and "weird" audiovisual presentation. The soundtrack is noted for its eclectic style, featuring bizarre J-pop tunes and even vocal samples, which was advanced for the GBA hardware at the time.
